What Is a French Drain?
A French drain is a trench filled with gravel and containing a perforated pipe. The trench is dug along the path where groundwater collects — typically along a slope, at the base of a hill, or around a foundation. Water seeps through the soil into the gravel, enters the perforated pipe through small slots, and flows along the pipe to a safe discharge point away from the problem area.
French drains are ideal for soggy lawns, water seeping through a slope, and groundwater pooling near a foundation. They work below the surface, so they do not interfere with mowing or foot traffic once installed and covered with soil and sod.
What Is a Catch Basin?
A catch basin is a box-like structure with a grated inlet installed at ground level in a low spot where surface water collects. Water flows across the surface into the grate, drops into the basin below, and exits through a solid (non-perforated) pipe to a discharge point. The basin also captures debris and sediment, preventing it from entering and clogging the discharge pipe.
Catch basins are ideal for surface runoff on hardscapes — driveways, patios, pool decks — and for lawn depressions where rainwater naturally pools. They handle high volumes of surface water quickly because the grate captures water as fast as it arrives.

When to Use Each

The water is coming from below, and you need to intercept it underground. Choose a catch basin when your problem is surface runoff pooling on a driveway, patio, or low spot in the yard after rain. The water is on top of the ground, and you need to capture it at the surface.
When You Need Both
Many properties have both problems. A sloped yard may produce surface runoff that pools at the bottom (needing a catch basin) while also saturating the soil along the slope (needing a French drain). A home with a driveway that drains toward the house and a high water table near the foundation may need a catch basin at the driveway edge and a French drain along the foundation.
